Indian Newspaper Day is celebrated on January 29 every year to promote Indian Newspapers and their importance. The day commemorates the birth of the first Indian newspaper, Hicky's Bengal Gazette, which was published on January 29, 1780, in Kolkata, the nation's capital at the time.

Hicky's Bengal Gazette was the first English-language newspaper and the first printed newspaper to be published in both the Indian sub-continent and in Asia. It was founded by the James Augustus Hickey, a highly eccentric Irishman who had previously spent two years in jail for dept. The newspaper become famous not only among the British soldiers posted in India but also inspired Indians to write newspapers of their own.
