World Hindi Day or Vishwa Hindi Diwas - 10 January

World Hindi Day is observed on January 10 to commemorate the first World Hindi Conference held in January 1975 at Nagpur, Maharashtra. The first World Hindi Day was celebrated in 2006 at the behest of former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. It marks the day when Hindi was first spoken in the United Nations' General Assembly in 1949.



The World Hindi Conference (विश्व हिंदी सम्मेलन) or Vishva Hindi Sammelan is a world conference which was first held in 1975 in Nagpur, India. It was inaugurated on 10 January 1975 by the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.

The 12th World Hindi Conference was held in Nadi, Fiji from 15-17 February 2023. It was organized in collaboration with the Government of Fiji. The main theme of the conference is "Hindi – Traditional Knowledge to Artificial Intelligence". 

World Hindi Secretariat
The idea of establishing a World Hindi Center was presented by Sir Shivsagar Ramgoolam, the then Prime Minister of Mauritius and Chairman of the delegation, during the First World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur in 1975. On September 17, 2001, the Vishwa Hindi Secretariat started functioning. On November 12, 2002, an Act related to the establishment and management of the World Hindi Secretariat was passed by the Government of Mauritius.The World Hindi Secretariat Act, passed in the Mauritius National Assembly in November 2002, was promulgated on 12 September 2005.The World Hindi Secretariat officially began functioning on 11 February 2008. The aim of the World Hindi Secretariat is the promotion of Hindi as an international language and creating a global platform to make Hindi an official language of the United Nations.
