World Coconut Day - 2 September

2 September is celebrated as World Coconut Day to raise awareness about the importance and benefits of coconut.

As you know, coconut is one of the most popular and most used fruits in the world. It has got versatile uses and benefits.

Origin of the Name

The name coconut is derived from the 16th-century Portuguese word "coco", meaning 'head' or 'skull'. It is named by the Portuguese or Spanish explorers as the three indentations on the coconut shell which looked like a human face. It reminded them of a mythical ghost like character in their folklore, called coco.

The term "coconut"  can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit. The scientific name of Coconut tree is Cocos nucifera.

Indonesia is the world's leading coconut producer in 2019, with about 17.13 million metric tons of coconuts produced, followed by Philippines and India.

World Coconut Day

World Coconut Day was first observed in 2009 by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC or Cocommunity). APCC is an intergovernmental organisation of states in Asia-Pacific that produce coconuts. 

This year’s theme for world coconut day is "Building a Safe Inclusive Resilient and Sustainable Coconut Community Amid COVID-19 Pandemic & Beyond”.

The theme of World Coconut Day 2020 this year was – “Invest in Coconut to save the world” and the theme in 2019 for World Coconut Day was 'Coconut For Family Wellness. '

Coconut Development Board

Coconut Development Board (CDB) is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of India for the integrated development of coconut and coconut-related products. Its headquarters at Kochi in Kerala and regional Offices at Bangalore in Karnataka, Chennai in Tamil Nadu and Guwahati in Assam.
