The word 'for' is used to show a period of time, be it in the past, present or future. For means "from the beginning of the period to the end of the period". For can be used with all tenses.

The word 'since' is used to refer to a time that has begun in the past and is still continuing. It is used as a Preposition. Since is normally used with perfect tenses

Both for and since also have other meanings, with no reference to time.
